Englefield Green

The village and its amenities

Englefield Green is an especially beautiful and historic place in which to live. At Harben Lets we provide a high standard of student accommodation and lettings throughout this sought after area.

Past

The College itself is a truly magnificent Victorian edifice, modelled on a French château and built as the world’s first university for women.

The UK’s last duel was fought with pistols in the field half way down Priest Hill on the right hand side. The loser was then taken to The Barley Mow pub by the Village Green where he expired.

Historic Runnymede, where the Magna Carta was signed, is just down Priest Hill by the River Thames. This area is flat farmland with cattle grazing between the river and the wooded high ground upon which lies Englefield Green. Also at Runnymede are to be found the gazebo of the Runnymede Memorial and the stone block of the John F Kennedy Memorial.

On the top of Coopers Hill is the Air Forces Memorial dedicated to the 22,000 British and Commonwealth airmen who lost their lives in the Second World War and who have no known graves. From the platform above the turret of the memorial are wonderful views stretching from London in the east to way beyond Windsor to the west. In front and below are Runnymede and the River Thames.

Present

In the heart of the village is The Green. Cricket is regularly played there, as is football. In June each year it is the venue for the Village Fair. Later in the year it accommodates a visiting steam driven funfair.

Close by is Windsor Great Park with lakes, Totem Pole, statues, monuments and ruins. In May the Valley Gardens with Punch Bowl offer a magnificent display of azaleas and rhododendrons, and throughout the year there are magnificent walks and cycle rides.

On the edge of the village, and within the Park, are the Savill Gardens which boast something special to see every day of the year. There is also a good restaurant and garden centre with shop.

The village of Englefield Green has many shops, between them able to satisfy all day to day needs. Also available are several good restaurants. Of particular note there are 2 Indian & 2 Italian restaurants. There are eight public houses ready to refresh the weary student. Each has an individual style and several also offer good food.
